How to destinguish gender in chickens

By James Mills of Multimaster Enterprizes

A) Auto Sexing Breeds
1) Some breeds are bred specifically so that the cockerels
and pullets hatch as different colours. These breeds are
called auto sexing and they include breeds like
isa browns. They are generally bred for eggs so that the
roosters can be discarded sooner than otherwise possible.
B) Non Auto Sexing Breeds
2) Comb sexing is easiest to perform when you have one of
each sex from the same brood. The birds need to be of at
least 6 weeks of age. At this age it will be evident that
cockerels have a pinkish red, slightly swelled comb
whereas the pullets have a smaller, yellowish comb.
3) Vent sexing is a highly specialised way of sexing chicks
from just a couple of days old. It was invented in Asia
and should only be performed by professionally trained
people.
It entails looking inside the vent (cloaca) and trying
to destinguish a small "bump" in males.
4) Leg sexing, as with comb sexing, is easiest to perform
by comparison (with at least one of each sex at the same
age). It entails looking at the legs of the bird in
question. Male birds generally have thicker legs (often
very slight) than female legs. Also, it can be possible
to look for spurs, which in most cases only advance past
"spur bumps" in males. However, this is not always true
as in some breeds, females also grow spurs, some as
long as 5-7cm.

There are also some other ways of sexing chickens. The
methods shown above are some of the most commonly used,
most reliable, and easiest ways of sexing chickens.

Please do not try to perform the vent sexing method
until you have had a professional show you the
correct technique.
